Corporate decisions on LGBT friendliness: a multi-level approach

Purpose This research investigates how and why firms adopt inclusive diversity activities, identifying the mechanisms behind involved in lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender (LGBT)–friendly pursuits. By integrating resource dependence theory, institutional theory stakeholder authors argue that a firm's LGBT friendliness is affected by marketing orientation external political environment. Design/methodology/approach study uses Corporate Equality Index, as reported Human Rights Campaign, of 460 (1,540 firm-year observations) United States between 2006 2019. Findings finds significant, positive relationship LGBT-friendly activities. also determines this weakened state-level policies country-level uncertainty. Originality/value The results provide unique theoretical practical implications for debate on corporate policy similar global markets.
